After a triumphant return for the Star Wars franchise, the bosses at Disney have decided to keep their cash cow chomping grass by launching a new Star Wars trilogy.
This new story will begin after the current trilogy ends in 2019, and will feature a whole new set of characters and storylines. The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson will be the creative mind behind the new trilogy, something Disney is very excited about.
“In shepherding this new trilogy, which is separate from the episodic Skywalker saga, Johnson will introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored.”
President of Lucas Films Kathleen Kennedy said:
Rian a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”
This is a huge gamble for Disney. They’ll be moving away from the Skywalkers, Solos and Kenobis of the universe, and introducing a brand new story arc for the first time.
Star Wars: Rogue One was a hit with fans, despite it being devoid of character, plot, soul and lightsabres — so Disney obviously believe this franchise is absolutely indestructible right now.
There are rumours that Johnson’s trilogy will be set in the distant past — charting the beginning of the Jedi. While this news will excite most fans, others can’t help feeling that is a sad indictment on a modern movie industry that must break the $1billion box office mark to consider a movie a success.
