Sunderland's Stadium of Light

Newcastle United fans are in heaven this evening after it emerged that Netflix is to launch a documentary series about Sunderland’s dreadful 2017/2018 season.

Cameras have been following fans and key figures within the club as the Wearside club tried to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

But Netflix producers couldn’t have been prepared for what eventually transpired. A disastrous season leaves the Mackems staring down the barrel of a second successive relegation — and it’s going to make incredible viewing.

Let’s hope we see more classy scenes like this one — featuring a Sunderland fan taking a shite in the stands.

Sunderland AFC fans have endured several high profile player sales, a string of terrible home performances and constant speculation about administration and bankruptcy. This isn’t going to be a documentary… more like a soap opera.

Of course, the fat lady hasn’t sung yet. Sunderland are still in with a slim chance of survival, which will give the new series a happy ending. However, if the Wearsiders are sent down to League One, expect Netflix subscriptions in Newcastle to skyrocket.
