Former Manchester City and Real Madrid forward Robinho was sentenced to nine years in prison yesterday for sexual assault, but he’s protesting his innocence via his Instagram account.
The Brazilian striker was playing for AC Milan in 2013 when the incident in question occurred. He and five other men were convicted of gang-raping a 22-year-old Albania woman they met in a nightclub — but Robinho isn’t having any of it, and he plans to appeal.
Robinho’s statement is as follows:
“We would like to clarify that he has already defended himself against the accusations, affirming that he did not participate in the episode,” a statement on the player’s Instagram feed reads. “All legal measures are being taken.”
Robinho remains a free man today, however, as the appeal process still has some time to unfold.
Robinho was the signing that heralded Manchester City’s arrival as a super-rich European powerhouse of football. He also made more than 100 appearances for Brazil.
