Tyson Fury talks a really good fight when it comes to Anthony Joshua, but I suppose you can when you’ve stewed in your own juices and gained 100 pounds over three years.
But Fury is back… well, almost. It is being reported that The Gypsy King will sign with promoter Frank Warren today. The news is expected to be confirmed at a press conference later today.
According to reports in the Daily Mail, the deal has already been agreed. The former lineal heavyweight champion has done nothing but eat, drink and take drugs for the last three years, but he’s making a return to the boxing scene with has-been promoter Warren.
Frank Warren Promotions has confirmed a press conference for today, and Fury is expected to be there. There is also a rumour that a fight could be announced — although there has been no confirmation of that as yet.
This was Fury with Ricky Hatton yesterday. While he’s definitely lost weight, he still looks some way off being ready for a title fight.
Frank Warren has been eclipsed in the promotion stakes by Eddie Hearn in recent years. Hearn and Matchroom boxing have made Britain the home of heavyweight boxing, and that would have been unthinkable in Warren’s heyday.
Of course, Warren has another card under his sleeve, in the form of prospect Daniel Dubois. It’ll be interesting to see who gets special treatment.
What will also be interesting is whether or not the Hearn family and Frank Warren can do business to make a British super fight happen. There’s no love lost between the two parties, so negotiating a contract could get a little tricky.
